aah dude its a must bu tdont cheap out, i have a cobra radar detector and i paid 150.00 for mine, its definatly a good thing, saved me from many tickets.... and oh yeah its 360 degrees detection, it pick up a cop on "K" band within a mile or little more... "ka" band about half a mile... its a must get!!!

 

its only a waste of money if its a cheap one. whether or not its a 'must have' depends on you. for me, its whatever, i might or might not get one. but don't be stingy with your money, you can get a decent one for 150 and an even better one for 200+

 

Spend the money on a Passport detector. The 8500 I think it is. I had one about 4 years ago.

Since I learned to calm down while driving, I really haven't needed one.

That thing saved me from some hefty fines.

The way I look at, if you get it, its an excuse to drive faster because you have one. If you dont purchase it, you end up being a lil more cautious when you drive. There is always traffic here in so cal so it may be just a waste of money here.

well it depends on how much you spend. a radar detector isnt a gaurentee that you won't get caught. it only detects the radar, most cops don't drive with it on. if you appear to be going fast they'll tag you and by thats time its to late.

 

true, i have no plans as of yet to buy one since i dont tend to speed unless provoked.

 

i started searching up about radar detectors, and i came to the conclusion that Bel STi seems to be the best one. i read alot of reviews and comparisons about the Bel STi vs. Valentine1 vs. etc. the Bel STi wins overall. as stated in one of the links, the valentine 1 and the Bel STi performance are almost the same, except that the Valentine 1 picks up countless false alarms, whereas the Bel STi filters it.

This is a newbie question but... are these things illegal?

but it only searched for radar guns, so its not gonna alarm you if a cop is around you

 

They are only illegal in certain states (VA I think is one of them), but most states they are not. By the way I used to have an Escort 8500 a couple of years back and all I can say is that thing was awesome! It saved me from many a ticket. To me, for the money, you can't go wrong with Escort. Not saying the other's arent just as good or better, but they're way more expensive too. All in all if you want a really good radar detector and don't want to go broke getting one, go with an Escort.
