Well I like the ones by Cobra. But I know there are others out there. But make sure to do your research first, because there is some cheap ass ones that don't work effectively.

What they do is they detect the radar/laser signals given off.

    yo
like I said b4 that our company works for various city. we conduct vehicle volume analysis speed analysis & radar studies. yes radar studies like the ones that cops has I've testd various radar detector, for my personal interest cuz I was curious & since I got access to a radar gun :D
here's the deal no matter what kind of radar you buy cheap or expensive just to let you know they all work just be sure to read the manual before u decide to go crusin that's all I can say watch carefully how your radar works and try to understand it

I have a $ 20 radar and it work the same as the $120 ones

^ True toa point but not entirely. Different radars have different functions, hence the price difference. I have yet to see a $20 one that picked up all radar bands and laser, 360* protection, and a scrambler that was worth a crap. I'm in the market and sell them all the time.

I bought a $60 cobra radar detector and it works great. the only thing i dont like is that it dont tell you where the signal is coming from. The valentine does but its too expensive for me.

that true "different radars have different functions" that is why you need to read the manual and understand how the radar work and observe.

my radar does that all that crap but i was able to observe and understand all of those and use it as effective as those cobra ones...

and it only takes a few minutes reading the manual and cruisin around cop populated areas to see how the radar works...

its also kinda nice to know all the different kinds of radar bands, cuz you know not all radar are created the same.

you shoud get used to different bands too, you know

my uncle has always used radar detectors altho im not sure what brand but they have worked realy well. and last night we randomly desided to go pick up one of my friends, friends from Joplin, Missorri ( i live in Owasso, Oklahoma ), so my friend bought a Cobra radar detector from wal-mart and it did the job perfect. was a little confusing but did it well. but she is returning it today

Escort is one of the best out there and I prefer it over the Valentine. On the cheaper side, look at Rocky Mountain.

For the most part it is. But some people get all special and want it hard wired so thier are no cords or they conseal the cords.

wow people actually spend that much for a detector.

I kinda agree with you man. Personal reference. If you like it, and you know it's worth it, then that's all you.

But I got a better radar that's much better and I didn't have to spend anything at all... my unc is a cop down here, and he would call/txt me when there is a check point.
