Anyone have this problem? Just replaced the timing belt in our bone stock 2002 OZ Lancer, lined up the pulleys while the old belt was still on, put the new belt on exactly the same way, rotated the crank pulley per the factory manual to get the tensioner tensioned...it runs, but it sounds like the valve timing is advanced: rattling in engine when under load, assuming that its detonation.

Reviewed what I did, cannot figure out what is going on. Engine ran great before I replaced the timing belt.

BTW, I am a newbie here.

    Suggestions?

This happened to me once but on a different car. This sounds very idiotic but try checking the area again. There maybe a bolt stuck there that is pertruding and rubbing on one of the belts. Sometimes something simple like that can help. But you said the timing seems advanced, so you may try a timing light for tdc and adjust from there.

BTW, introduce yourself in the new members forum.

Also... try resetting your ECU. It might help some.

FYI, its repaired: when I went back into it, found the reluctor had advanced by 30 degrees or so, and still ran! But did it rattle from detonation.Pulled the crank pulley and found that the roll pins holding the reluctor to the crank pulley weren't holding the reluctor blade to the pulley any longer, and had moved during reassembly previously. Drilled out the old roll pins, installed new ones, put it all back together and the car is now running fine.

It looked like the crank pulley problem may have occurred when the factory put the engine together as the roll pins looked like something was trying to knock them off (roll pin ends were smashed and pushed in one direction, if it had just happened the metal would have been shiny).

Anyway, it was a wierd problem that was easy to fix, despite having to disassemble everything again to pull off the crank pulley.

    Thanks for the opinions.
