For those who haven't read it already, here's an article about it.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162...-into-virginia-beach-apartments-pilots-eject/

tl;dr: One Navy F/A-18 crashed into an apartment complex in VA Beach. The pilots dumped their remaining fuel before the crash, avoiding a "massive, massive fireball and fire." Seven people were injured, including both pilots, but none seriously. The cause of the crash is unknown at this time.

still currently searching for personnel in the other 3 buildings out of the 5 that were damaged...and CNN is making me really angry. "don't you think they should have ditched into the ocean?" uhh don't you think they would have if they could have you idiots?

Yeah, really. We don't know what caused the accident or what the pilot could have done about it, so let's not be so quick to vilify him. The Navy and certainly the pilots involved in these types of accidents don't take them lightly. Lives are lost or ruined, public opinion is damaged, and lots of money is wasted. It makes me mad that people are so quick to judge.

ok for those that dont know about jets, which is something i work on for a living. if you lose the engine power, you get whats called a "dead stick" you CANNOT move the aircraft. its kinda like when your engine dies in your car and you lose power steering. same concept. the best thing those pilots did was dump the fuel that was nearly topped off in that aircraft. if they left a fully fueled jet to crash, explosion and shockwave would have been really severe. so the best thing was to dump all that fuel, which they did. i dont know if it was mechanical failure in the engines, BUT if it was then they got the "dead stick" which they would have no choice but to ditch it towards the ground and TRY to keep the damage to a minimal. so lets take some time to THINK about things before we HARD BASH our MILITARY. WE protect this COUNTRY with our LIVES, stuff happens that we cannot avoid but we are TRAINED to keep things at a minimal. we are TRAINED over and over for worse case senario's all the time. if all of us was on a ship and it caught fire and it was out of control and it was sinking, i can garuntee that i could put it out and keep us from sinking. that is my training that i had to do over and over and over on a ship. we are TRAINED so PLEASE think before you HARD BASH us. thank you.

^Have a fine Navy day, shipmate!

Also, you may want your wife to spell check and approve your writing before posting, as I'm sure she's a good YN. LOL!

But in all seriousness, the pilot did everything he could before ejecting, and we should all be thankful that nobody got seriously hurt. That's the most important thing we can take away from this.

oh and another thing, the pilots themselves after they ejected landed on buildings and such and got all bruised up and bloody. so if they COULD HAVE ditched over water, im sure they would have. better landing over water than a house.
