Hello all, I'm not sure if this is the place to post this message, but I looked around and didn't see where else it should go. One of the first things I noticed about the NAV system (besides it's really good features) is because of the touch screen, fingerprints show up big time. My question is what is a (or the) recommended cleaner to use when cleaning this screen? I've heard stories of people who use the wrong type of cleaner on this type of screen which ends up ruining the screen itself, or causes the screen itself to change color (like whiteout etc). Also what type of cleaning cloth should be used so as to make sure not to scratch the screen. Thanks for all input.

If you don't want to worry about ruining the screen, I would suggest not to use cleaners such as Windex.

Some office supply stores or even auto shops sell some type of special made LCD cleaner. And as for the type of cleaning cloth, I would recommend using a micro fiber towel.

    Hope that helps.

^Not windex, its too strong for the touch screen. I suggest using the cleaning products you would use to clean pc monitors, like those moisten wipe cloths

There's actually a great product that I use for cleaning anything LCD in my whole house. I also work at Best Buy and we use it to clean just about everything in the store. It's made by Monster and retails for about $20. Check it out.

Is this what you are talking about?

If so have you or anyone else used this product? Is it tested safe? If so I'm just wondering why this is about $7.00, and what smurf9271 is recommending is $20?

As it has been stated, any harsh cleaners, such as windex, use Ammonia as its primary base compound in order to remove oil, mineral, and saturates from the surface. The bad part is that LCD (Liquid Crystal Displays) have a very fine protective plastic layer to protect them from the elements. Just like a strong acid will tear through plastics and other materials, so will a strong Base such as Ammonia.

The recommendations that have been made are the best. I know that at the Best Buy I work at, we carry a kit that will give you a microfiber cloth as well as a liquid spray on cleaner to remove oily finger prints and other dirt. What makes this liquid cleaner work is that they dilute the ammonia, or equivalent, compound with distilled, impurity free water to neutralize the cleaner compound a bit. That way, it is affective, but won't try to eat through your screne because of its mineral numerical ratio. Some things to keep in mind though:

    1) NEVER EVER spray directly onto the LCD screen any chemical no matter if it is rated for safe usage or not. Even a diluted cleaning chemical, when sprayed in concentration on one area can have adverse affects on the screne. It's like talking a taco and choosing between putting a lot of mild hot sauce or a little strong hot sauce on it. Both will have about the same concentration of harmful chemicals when all is said and done. Not to mention the fact that you will go through the diluted cleaning solution a lot quicker. The best way is to spray one, maybe twice into the microfiber rage and then GENTLY wipe the LCD and its surrounding Bezel.

    2) NEVER EVER push with any amount of force on a LCD. This can lead to cracking of the plastic shrouds that encase the liquid crystals which will cause the black blobbing affect. The thing to know is that even a little pressure can, over time, crack these casings and you won't even know it until it is too late. Remember, you may never crack the scene it self (a big visible crack), but you can crack the plastic shroud.

    3) Remember to periodically wash out the microfiber cloth. Most will start to get black spots from the cleaner and dirt being removed. If you never clean the cloth, than you are just putting dirt and oil back onto the screen requiring more frequent cleaner. That can add up depending on how much of a clean freak you are.

    4) Take the 2 seconds and read the 5 to 6 step process that is provided in the cleaning packet. You will be amazed at how many questions are cleared up by doing this.
